Garlicky Immunity

In ancient times, garlic was used as a way to fend off vampires. In modern times, we can use it to fight off infections and bacteria. In fact, according to a recent study in Great Britain, those who eat more garlic (six cloves or more per week) were two-thirds less prone to catching a cold. Not only that, but eating more garlic can significantly lower your risk of certain types of cancer. And since garlic is included in so many different menu items these days, it’s easy to find a delicious meal that offers some natural immunity boosting power for lunch today!

Chicken Noodle Soup

While you may have thought that chicken soup as a cure for flu-like illnesses was just an old wives tale, think again. When you get sick with a cold, inflammatory white cells tend to accumulate in your bronchial tubes. This is what gives you those really bad cold symptoms that make getting through a work day really tough. Chicken soup blocks those same cells from migrating to different areas of your body. And that’s really a fancy way of saying that chicken soup is a balanced lunch that can help you stay healthier, making it a great choice to order today.

Bring on the Beef

With all the hype surrounding some of the negative impacts of red meat, many people have cut back on the amount they consumer of this tasty lunchtime ingredient choice. Unfortunately, this has led to a rise in zinc deficiencies in adults across America. Since zinc is a natural booster of healthy white blood cell development, not getting enough of this valuable nutrient can mean that your body just isn’t up to fighting off some of the infections that travel around at this time of year. You can easily help solve this by adding more beef into your diet. Because beef is a big source of zinc, it’s one of the best natural immune boosters to work into your lunchtime routine today!

Fancy a Mushroom?

Advocates of healthier living have long promoted the consumption of mushrooms as one of their favorite natural immune boosters. In fact, mushrooms have been used as a healthy way to boost immunity for several centuries. And studies have proven that this tasty veggie is more than just delicious: it helps your body create more white blood cells, while also increasing the activity of these types of cells in your body. This helps you fight off infections more easily. For the most benefit, stick with Japanese mushroom choices like Shiitake, Maitake, and Reishi mushrooms.

I feel you should mention spinach, blueberries, and oranges for their antioxidant properties and in the case of spinach, its versatility to be added to soups, pastas, and salads.

I can’t believe I didn’t know this about meat and your immune system. I’ll have to start eating a lot more beef.

You should show some love for tuna. I’ve found that tuna is a great food that boosts the immune system as well as the brain.

I didn’t know there was a real reason for the old chicken soup recommendation! I’d always blown that one off as an old wive’s tale. I know zinc is a major component of some of the homeopathic options available for cold and flu prevention and treatment that are commonly available in drugstores, but I’ll try some chicken soup with supper and see if that helps too.

I always wondered why moms would give their kids chicken noodle soup when they are sick. I do eat a lot of garlic but 6 cloves a week sounds like to much for me to handle.

There are so many supplements out there to boost the immune system that I am so confused as to what to pick. It’s a great idea just to incorporate some of these natural immune boosters into my meal plans to ward off sickness this winter.

Very true, Anna! Supplements are great, but getting the vitamins we need from natural food sources can be even better!

  9. Lindsay says:

This is literally the best timing! My husband just got over the flu, and I’ve started to feel sick today 🙁 Hopefully it’s not anything but if it is, I will know what to eat!

What a great excuse to have the cheeseburger I’m already craving! You hear so much bad stuff about red meat but you hardly ever hear hear about the health benefits of red meat. And, yes, it’s nice to get the supplements in food rather than a powder or pill that’s unnatural and you wonder what chemicals come with it. By getting it into your diet naturally you can avoid that concern and still stay healthy. Thanks!
